I grew up in Montana surrounded by nature and wildlife. We had quarter horses, chickens, rabbits, the occasional duck or turkey and lots of dogs, which is probably why I have such a deep love for all critters and enormous respect for nature. I’ve been drawn to art as long as I can remember, drew and painted a lot through high school, a little through college, then “life” took me away from the West and took all my time - I didn’t do any type of art for more than a decade, but the desire was always there, until I finally took notice again and slowly made it more and more a part of my life. Moving to the Pacific Northwest in 1998 was a great boost, being so close to nature once again, I can’t help but be inspired – for me, nature is art.
When I was traveling for work frequently, I started using colored pencils – a great, portable way to bring art on the road with me. I re-acquainted myself with watercolor and oils through weekend classes and workshops. I’ve done mainly commissions over the years as a hobby (hence, tons of pet portraits!) with family and friends being my greatest supporters. I strive to give the sense that the viewer can feel the spray of water as the rolling waves hit the rocks, or reach out to ruffle the dog’s ear--capturing a brief, seemingly inconsequential moment in life that depicts….life. These are things that make me pause mid-stride and take note as life roars by.
